Rewa football midfielder Tevita Waranaivalu has honored his family and teammates in light of his recent accolade, understanding their unwavering support during difficult times.
Waranaivalu has made history as the first Fijian footballer to win the inaugural Digicel Fiji Premier League Golden Ball Award, a recognition presented during the Fiji Football Association’s award ceremony held at the Sugar Cane Growers Building in Lautoka on Friday night.
The Tailevu native reflected on the challenges he faced over the past two seasons, particularly dealing with injuries and weight issues. “I have been through a lot,” he remarked, highlighting the ups and downs he navigated throughout the season.
He shared, “I got injured at the start of the season, yet that motivated me to push through to the end.” Despite spending time on the bench and receiving only brief playing stints, Waranaivalu emphasized his determination to improve, particularly with his diet, which he noted contributed to his struggles with being overweight.
He expressed gratitude for the support of his family, stating, “They’ve always been there for me, cheering me on no matter where I play.” Waranaivalu attributed his success to the team, saying, “I couldn’t have earned this award without them. We’ve grown significantly as a unit.”
He credited the resilient team spirit they maintained through financial challenges and other difficulties, asserting that this communal effort played a vital role in his achievement. Waranaivalu dedicated the award to his two sons, Richard and King David.
Earlier this month, he also received the player of the tournament award during the Police Inter Formation Championship 2024 held in Nausori.
