Sergeant Zaira Begg, a former titleholder of Miss Fiji from Ba with family ties to Nukutubu village in Rewa, is making her mark as the youngest member of the latest deployment to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). Led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Aseri Nakibo, the contingent includes 14 members, six of whom are women, showcasing the Fiji Police Force’s commitment to increasing female representation in international missions.
At just 28 years old, Sgt. Begg, who serves in the Community Policing Department at the Fiji Police Academy, views her selection as a significant reflection of divine guidance in her life. She recalls a decade ago when she volunteered with the Fiji Red Cross Society and dreamed of working with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in conflict regions. Today, she is ready to embark on this important mission alongside experienced officers who will offer mentorship and support.
Sgt. Begg expressed her deep gratitude, proclaiming, “All glory and praise belong to God,” for providing her this opportunity. She also recognized the Fiji Police Force for empowering young women and fostering their development into future leaders, as well as extending thanks to her family and community for their unwavering support.
This story highlights not just an individual’s journey but also broader progress within the Fiji Police Force and efforts towards gender equality in peacekeeping roles. Sgt. Begg’s story serves as a source of inspiration, showing that with dedication and support, young women can achieve their aspirations, even in challenging fields like international policing.
