Viki Wini Tora’s battle with breast cancer began in 2019, marking a profound journey that she approached with remarkable resilience and an unwavering positive spirit. At the age of 48 and as a mother of seven, Tora initially discovered a lump in her breast. Despite facing several unsuccessful treatments, her determination led her to insist on further testing, culminating in a biopsy that ultimately confirmed her cancer diagnosis.

The emotional turmoil during the waiting period for her results weighed heavily on her thoughts, particularly concerning her children’s futures. “Negative thoughts were inescapable,” she stated, yet her focus on recovery prevailed. By adhering to a strict diet and drawing strength from her family’s support, Tora fought through her treatment and, after five long years, received the joyous news that she was cancer-free and would no longer require follow-up appointments.

Tora’s journey has ignited a deep commitment to advocacy, inspiring her to take on a role at the Fiji Cancer Society (FCS) as a patient care staff member. There, she supports women who find themselves in similar predicaments, especially those lacking familial support during their treatments. “I feel sorry for the women who don’t have any family members there to support them,” she reflects on the heartbreaking stories she encounters from patients often left alone in their battles.

Another survivor, Mere Tikoduadua, currently facing stage 4 breast cancer, shares a similar sentiment about the significance of support systems. She also identifies hope as a crucial principle guiding her through adversity, mirroring Tora’s outlook. Their stories underscore the vital role that resilience plays when confronting life-altering health challenges.

Tora passionately urges other breast cancer patients to utilize available resources and share their journeys. “When women can talk about their experiences, we can better advise them on what to do,” she insists, emphasizing the collective strength found in shared stories.

Together, the narratives of Tora and Tikoduadua emphasize the necessity of community support and camaraderie among those impacted by cancer. In times where cancer poses a considerable health threat, the inspiring journeys of survivors like Viki Wini Tora resonate with many, symbolizing hope and resilience. They remind us about the immense strength rooted in community, the importance of advocating for one another, and the power of maintaining a positive outlook during the toughest of times.
