From Backyard to Farm Biz: Jasnita Ali’s Hydroponic Dream Takes Flight

Jasnita Ali, a 32-year-old backyard gardener, is set to scale up her hydroponic farm into a commercial venture following a grant of US$5,000 (F$11,228.75) awarded to her last week. The grant was presented by the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) program at the Hilton Fiji Resort in Denarau on Wednesday.

Ms. Ali plans to use the funds to enhance her business by purchasing additional materials and expanding her infrastructure. “Our goal is to produce fresh, organic vegetables that are free from chemicals and pesticides and offer them to consumers at a lower price than currently available,” she stated.

Her business, Nature’s Farm Fresh Supplies (NFFS), is a small hydroponic farm located in Chinakoti, Ba, which she launched in September 2022 in her backyard. Motivated by the rising concerns of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the region, Ms. Ali chose to pursue hydroponic farming.

“It is essential for consumers to adopt healthier eating habits to foster better lifestyles,” Ms. Ali emphasized. NFFS employs a combination of the Dutch Bucket System and Deep Flow Technique (DFT) hydroponics to grow crops on a quarter-acre of land.

“We utilize advanced technology like the automated dosing system from Bluelab in our operations,” she added. Ms. Ali noted that the hydroponics approach allows for a diverse range of crops to be nurtured year-round, ensuring a consistent supply of fresh, healthy, and chemical-free vegetables.

Additionally, she highlighted her commitment to inclusivity within her business by employing individuals with disabilities, members of the LGBTIQ community, and unemployed youth. Reflecting on her earlier experiences as a traditional farmer, Ms. Ali shared the challenges she faced during flooding and drought conditions. “With the hydroponic system in place, we can grow various vegetables without concern for changing climate conditions,” she remarked.

The GIST Startup training program provides intensive business training aimed at empowering young innovators and entrepreneurs in science and technology through direct mentoring and guidance from U.S. experts, in collaboration with local partners.
