Jasnita Ali, a 32-year-old backyard gardener, intends to expand her hydroponic farm to a commercial level after recently receiving a grant of US$5,000 (F$11,228.75). The grant was awarded to her by the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) program at the Hilton Fiji Resort on Denarau last Wednesday.
Ms. Ali plans to utilize the funds to enhance her business by purchasing additional materials to broaden her farm’s infrastructure. “Our goal is to provide fresh, organic, chemical- and pesticide-free vegetables at lower prices than what consumers currently pay,” she explained.
Her venture, Nature’s Farm Fresh Supplies (NFFS), is a small hydroponic farm situated in Chinakoti, Ba, which she established in September 2022 in her backyard. Janita turned to hydroponic farming after reflecting on the alarming rates of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the country.
“It is essential for customers to adopt a healthier eating style, leading to an improved lifestyle,” she emphasized. NFFS employs the Dutch Bucket System combined with the Deep Flow Technique (DFT) hydroponics system to cultivate crops on a quarter-acre plot of land.
“We utilize advanced technology, including an automated dosing system from Bluelab, to operate our setup,” said Ms. Ali, who is also a mother. “Growing a variety of crops in our hydroponics system enables us to provide a continuous supply of fresh, healthy, chemical-free vegetables throughout the year.”
Moreover, Ms. Ali mentioned that her business prioritizes inclusivity by employing individuals with disabilities, members of the LGBTIQ community, and unemployed youth. She recounted the challenges she faced as a traditional farmer, particularly during periods of flooding and drought.
“With the hydroponic system in place, we can grow various vegetables without being affected by climate changes,” she added.
GIST’s Startup training program provides intensive business training to empower young innovators and entrepreneurs in science and technology through practical training and mentorship from leading U.S. experts, in collaboration with local partners.
