Backyard gardener Jasnita Ali, 32, is set to expand her hydroponic farm into a commercial venture following a receipt of a $5,000 grant, approximately F$11,228.75, last week. The grant was awarded to her by the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) program during a ceremony at the Hilton Fiji Resort on Denarau.
Ms. Ali stated that the funds will be utilized to scale up her business by acquiring additional materials to enhance her infrastructure. She aims to produce fresh, organic vegetables free from chemicals and pesticides and sell them to consumers at a more affordable rate than currently available in the market.
Her business, Nature’s Farm Fresh Supplies (NFFS), is a small-scale hydroponics operation located in Chinakoti, Ba. Ms. Ali launched her venture in September 2022 from her backyard in Ba. Inspired by the growing concern over non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the country, she ventured into hydroponic farming.
“It is crucial for customers to adopt a healthier diet, leading to improved lifestyle choices,” she expressed. NFFS employs the Dutch Bucket System along with the Deep Flow Technique (DFT) for its hydroponics, utilizing a quarter-acre of land.
To enhance their operations, the farm incorporates advanced technology, such as an automated dosing system from Bluelab. This innovative approach allows for a year-round supply of diverse, healthy, and chemical-free vegetables, according to Ms. Ali.
Additionally, she emphasizes inclusivity in her business model by hiring individuals with disabilities, those from the LGBTIQ community, and unemployed youth. Reflecting on her experiences as a traditional farmer, Ms. Ali noted the significant challenges faced during flooding and drought. However, with the hydroponic system in place, she said it is now possible to grow various vegetables without the worries associated with climate changes.
