Anjali Prasad’s journey to becoming a nurse took unexpected turns, stemming from her initial aspiration to pursue a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). She fell short by just five marks and faced financial difficulties that hindered her medical schooling options. Following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which stalled medical intakes, she pivoted to nursing, which ultimately became her path to success.
Recently, the 23-year-old graduated with a Bachelor of Nursing Science (Honours) from the University of Fiji’s Umanand Prasad School of Medicine and Health Science (UPSM). Throughout her studies, she managed numerous challenges, from selling goods to fund her education to balancing housework and online classes. At her graduation, she expressed immense gratitude, emphasizing the importance of support from her family, particularly her sisters, who reassured their parents about the nursing profession’s value.
Reflecting on her experiences, Prasad encouraged young women not to be deterred by life’s setbacks. Her message underscores resilience and highlights the importance of focusing on opportunities that arise—even when faced with closed doors. “When life closes one door, there’s a window open,” she said, encouraging others to seek out the possibilities beyond their initial plans.
