What started as a wide-eyed visit to observe a training session has evolved into a remarkable achievement for JD Sivivatu Kanth, who has been selected for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua Development Squad two years later. His journey, from aspiring AFL player to rugby talent, is anything but conventional.

Sivivatu hails from Macuata in Vanua Levu and has maternal roots in Nauru. He spent his early years there before moving to Fiji in 2023 to attend Ratu Navula College, where he quickly made an impact in rugby. His early adaptability was evident as he competed for the Ratu Navula College Under 18 team, the Nadi Rugby Union Under 20, the Nauru national team, and the Pacific Mana Academy all within the same year.

His impressive performances opened international doors, including stints with Sunnybank Dragons Senior Rugby in Australia, selection in the Queensland Reds extended squad, and a professional contract with VPC Andorra Rugby XV in Spain. However, the Drua pathway remained in focus for him after an initial visit in 2022, when he took a memorable photo with then-captain Meli Deralangi.

Now back in a development role, Sivivatu expressed his determination, saying, “The training has been very tough but I’ve been loving it and I will keep working hard. I’ve learned how to look after myself and my body as a professional rugby player, and I’ve picked up new skills training alongside the senior boys.”

His transition from spectator to squad member is a powerful example of persistence, adaptability, and self-belief. Out of the 12 players announced, he is one of eight newcomers to the squad. The Development Player programme is crucial for the Drua, providing emerging talent access to high-performance environments and assisting their transition into professional rugby—reflecting the franchise’s commitment to nurturing players ready for the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific league.

Sivivatu’s rapid ascent in rugby highlights not only his talent but also the opportunities available within the Fijian rugby system, inspiring many aspiring athletes to pursue their dreams.
