Beyond the headline

A weakening trough over the eastern islands, combined with a moist easterly wind flow, will bring pockets of cloud, showers and isolated thunderstorms through tonight and into tomorrow. The main impacts will be scattered showers across eastern and northern areas, with a greater risk of afternoon thunderstorms and heavy rainfall over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Localised heavy falls may produce flash flooding in low-lying and flood‑prone locations.

Occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri‑Ra, southern Bua, Cakaudrove, eastern Macuata, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau, Lomaiviti, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands. Most other areas should see generally fine conditions apart from the chance of afternoon or evening showers. Where afternoon thunderstorms develop, particularly across the larger islands, heavy falls are possible and could be intense over short periods.

Temperatures will remain in the mid‑20s to low‑30s Celsius. For Navua, Suva and Nausori, expect a low around 24°C and a high near 31°C tomorrow, with Sunday’s outlook a little warmer (about 25–32°C) and afternoon thunderstorms likely. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba can also expect daytime maxima around 31–32°C with the same risk of afternoon storms and heavy falls.

Winds will be a moderate easterly across the group and seas moderate for most coastal waters. Mariners and those using small craft should take usual care in moderate conditions. Rotuma remains under the influence of a trough: cloudy with some showers and isolated thunderstorms, moderate to fresh easterly winds and moderate to rough seas, with temperatures about 24–32°C.

The outlook for Sunday is similar: cloudy periods with some showers across the eastern provinces and island groups listed above, fine weather elsewhere apart from afternoon or evening showers, and afternoon thunderstorms with heavy falls expected again over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Residents in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas should be prepared for brief but intense downpours that could cause localised flooding.
