Beyond the headline

A weakening trough over the eastern islands combined with a moist easterly wind flow will keep much of the group under cloudy skies and spotty rain for the remainder of today. Showers are expected across eastern and northern islands while most other areas should only see the odd afternoon or evening shower. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms with heavy falls are forecast for Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, and localized heavy rain may lead to flash flooding in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas.

Cloudy periods with some showers are likely over Yasawa, Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri‑Ra, southern Bua, Cakaudrove, eastern Macuata, Taveuni and the nearby smaller islands, as well as Lau, Lomaiviti, Kadavu and adjacent isles. Elsewhere conditions will be mainly fine apart from the chance of afternoon or evening showers. Temperatures across most locations will range from the mid‑20s to low 30s Celsius, with many centres seeing daytime highs around 31–32°C and overnight lows near 24°C.

In the main urban centres, Navua, Suva and Nausori can expect cloudy periods with some showers and the risk of isolated afternoon or evening thunderstorms (Min 24°C, Max 32°C; Saturday outlook Min 25°C, Max 32°C). Nadi, Lautoka and Ba are forecast to be fine apart from possible afternoon or evening showers with isolated thunderstorms (Min 24°C, Max 32°C; Saturday Min 25°C, Max 32°C). The Coral Coast around Sigatoka will see cloudy periods with showers focused over the coast, but otherwise remain mostly fine by day (Min 24°C, Max 32°C).

Winds will be a moderate easterly across the group with moderate seas in most areas. Rotuma remains under a moist easterly flow with cloudy periods, some showers and isolated thunderstorms, and slightly fresher easterlies; seas there are moderate to rough with temperatures around 24–32°C (Saturday outlook 25–31°C). Mariners and those with small craft should take the moderate sea state into account when planning activities.

The forecast for Saturday shows a continuation of the same general pattern: cloudy periods with showers over the eastern and northern islands listed above, fine weather apart from afternoon or evening showers elsewhere, and continued risk of isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Given the potential for localised heavy rainfall, remain vigilant in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas and avoid driving through flooded roads.
