Fresh’et Navy Aims for Escott Shield Glory Amidst Challenges

The Fresh’et Navy rugby team is aiming for a breakthrough in the FMF Suva Rugby Escott Shield after finishing as runners-up for the past three seasons. Head coach Kaminieli Neiqisa is optimistic following the team’s recent 34-18 victory over Eastern Saints in round three of the competition held at Buckhurst Park.

“Our target this year is to win the Escott Shield. We’ve come close for three years, and it’s time to finally cross the finish line,” Neiqisa stated. However, he recognizes that the team faces significant challenges. Several senior players are currently unavailable due to peacekeeping duties and studies abroad, leading to gaps in crucial positions.

Despite these hurdles, Neiqisa emphasized the importance of building effective combinations and executing set plays. He noted, “It’s about getting our structures right and ensuring the team gels well.” He also pointed out Fresh’et Navy’s commitment to developing players who can advance to higher levels of rugby, potentially moving up to the Suva team, then to the Flying Fijians, and even securing overseas contracts.

Neiqisa highlighted the significance of patience in their campaign, stating, “Don’t rush the process but trust the process.” With this clear vision and a dedicated squad, Fresh’et Navy remains a strong contender as they prepare for the next matches in their pursuit of the Escott Shield.

This year’s competition is proving to be intense, with other teams also making headway, like TACKLE Kadavu, aiming for a quarter-final spot after securing multiple wins. As the league develops, the support for local rugby teams reflects a vibrant rugby culture that encourages both personal growth and competitive spirit.

The drive and commitment shown by Fresh’et Navy and other teams in the league provide hope for an exciting rugby season ahead, showcasing the potential of local athletes to shine at higher levels and inspire the next generation of players.
