Opposition MP Ketan Lal has expressed that while Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s intentions to run in the 2026 General Election may be genuine, it is time for Fiji to embrace a new generation of leaders. Lal acknowledged that Rabuka’s track record is significant; however, he criticized the lack of progress and momentum under his leadership, which he believes is essential for the nation’s needs.
Lal emphasized that bold and innovative ideas are necessary to tackle complex challenges such as economic recovery and climate change. He pointed out that many Fijians are seeking genuine change, with some leaving the country for better opportunities, and highlighted delays in key infrastructure projects.
According to Lal, as long as Rabuka continues to lead, there will be a scarcity of young leaders and fresh ideas. He urged the Prime Minister to honorably step aside to empower youth and women in leadership roles. Lal suggested that such a move would signify Rabuka’s dedication to fostering new leadership.
He called for Rabuka to retire, allowing the next generation to shape Fiji’s future. Lal believes that by doing so, the Prime Minister would create a legacy characterized by selflessness, prioritizing the country’s long-term progress. He concluded that new vision, energy, and leadership are necessary, and the younger generation is prepared to provide it.
