Fresh Graduates Power Fiji’s Digital Outsourcing Push

Twenty individuals recently celebrated their graduation from an innovative curriculum developed by Solved Fiji, aimed at enhancing the country’s knowledge processing outsourcing (KPO) and information technology outsourcing (ITO) capabilities. This 12-week pilot program offered in-depth training in essential fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), web design, online marketing, and digital development.

Janice Nand, director of Solved Fiji, emphasized the program’s goal of empowering young Fijians to confidently pursue high-value digital careers, while simultaneously assisting local businesses in growing and competing on a global scale. Nand stated, “These graduates are equipped to drive Fiji’s move up the outsourcing value chain, a win for our youth, our businesses, and our economy.”

During her remarks at the graduation ceremony, Australian High Commission First Secretary Emily Wilson recognized the importance of such initiatives in providing practical skills to meet the rising global demand for specialized outsourcing services. Wilson underscored Australia’s long-standing commitment to supporting Fiji’s outsourcing industry, stating, “We’re proud to back initiatives that build skills, create jobs, and drive inclusive growth in Fiji.”

Graduate Ilisaveci Volaumaitoga shared her personal experience, highlighting the valuable knowledge and skills she gained throughout the training. She noted that the program examined how AI tools can improve efficiency not just in outsourcing, but across various sectors such as education, finance, tourism, and healthcare. Volaumaitoga acknowledged the challenges faced during the program but credited teamwork and a positive spirit for their success.

This initiative is particularly relevant given the ongoing growth of Fiji’s outsourcing industry, which contributes approximately $235 million annually to the economy and has seen employment tripling since 2018, now exceeding 8,000 professionals. Despite a steady stream of graduates, there remains a significant skills gap in technical competencies demanded by KPO and ITO roles. To further support the graduates, Solved Fiji will assist them with direct placements in outsourcing companies located in Nadi and Suva.

The advancements made through programs like these reflect a broader trend in Fiji’s outsourcing sector, which is becoming increasingly sophisticated and integral to the economy. While efforts are being made to equip a skilled workforce, continued collaboration between educational institutions, government, and industry will be essential in meeting the demands of this evolving field.

Overall, the graduation marks a hopeful progression for young professionals in Fiji, representing not just individual achievement, but also a communal step towards an increasingly vibrant and competitive outsourcing landscape.
