The Fiji Water Flying Fijians have announced three significant changes to their squad ahead of the Autumn Nations Series due to injuries affecting key players. Lekima Tagitagivalu, Iosefo Masi, and Ponipate Loganimasi have been withdrawn, making way for newcomers Kitione Salawa, Joji Nasova, and Setareki Tuicuvu.
Head coach Mick Byrne expressed his disappointment over the injuries but emphasized the opportunities this presents for other players to step up. “There’s a wide selection base now. It’s never an easy decision choosing players, but it’s about team balance and what’s best for the team. We’re fortunate that we have such a deep pool of players to choose from,” Byrne stated.
Joji Nasova is back in the squad after a promising display during the Pacific Nations Cup, while Salawa’s selection reflects his recent progress and potential. Byrne highlighted the importance of giving players like Nasova the chance to grow within the team’s structure. “With Loganimasi coming out, it gives Joji Nasova another time, another opportunity. He showed in the PNC that he’s got a big upside to his game,” he said.
The squad is set to depart for Europe shortly, with hopes for a strong performance in what is anticipated to be a challenging series of matches. The Flying Fijians are gearing up for their first encounter against Scotland on November 2, followed by matches against Wales on November 10, Spain on November 17, and Ireland on November 23.
This reshaped squad not only showcases the depth of talent within Fijian rugby but also reflects a commitment to development as they aim to make strides on the international stage. With the integration of fresh faces and a focus on cultivating talent, the Flying Fijians are hopeful for a successful campaign this autumn.
