Fraud Scandal: Fiji Rugby Union Accountant and Partner in Custody

A former accountant at the Fiji Rugby Union, Pawan Deo, along with his partner Subhashni Mudaliar, has been remanded in custody pending a bail hearing. The pair appeared before Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza, facing charges of conspiracy to defraud, obtaining a gain, and obtaining financial advantage.

The allegations state that while Deo was the sole proprietor of Sports Supplies Limited (SSL) and the financial accountant for the Fiji Rugby Union, he collaborated with Mudaliar to unlawfully acquire $53,788.75 from the organization between February 1 and July 31, 2022.

Additionally, they are accused of fraudulently processing payments to SSL, resulting in an unauthorized gain of $7,291.83 for the company between February 1 and May 11, 2022.

The couple, who chose to represent themselves, had their charges read in English. FICAC prosecutor Mary Takinana raised no objections regarding bail but requested that certain conditions be imposed. Magistrate Hamza ordered that the couple remain in custody until their sureties are presented in court today.
