The Australian under-18 schoolboys rugby team is keen to make a comeback in the second test against the Fiji schoolboys after a disappointing 14-26 defeat in their first match at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka on Saturday. This loss marked Australia’s first defeat to Fiji since 2003, fueling their desire to showcase their abilities in the upcoming game.
Head coach Dan Hawke noted that the unique atmosphere in Fiji has provided an experience unlike any the boys have encountered. He praised the challenge of competing against a formidable Fijian team, emphasizing their counterattacking prowess, which led to three out of their four tries in the first test.
Hawke underscored the importance of discipline for his team, advising against becoming too relaxed and allowing Fiji to exploit their weaknesses. One of the key adjustments will be to avoid long cut passes, as the Fijian players demonstrated notable speed during the first match. The plan is to adhere closely to a structured approach and limit high-risk plays that could benefit their opponents.
Hawke stressed the significance of maintaining emotional control on the field, minimizing unnecessary offloads and avoiding erratic kicks that stray from their game plan. “The team is focused on playing a more controlled and disciplined game in the second test,” he stated.
The Australian and Fijian teams are scheduled to clash again today at 3 p.m. at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
