Pawan Deo, a former accountant at the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), and his wife Subhashni Mudaliar have appeared in the Suva Magistrate’s Court where they pleaded not guilty to multiple charges including conspiracy to defraud, obtaining a financial gain, and obtaining financial advantage. The couple’s hearing, presided over by Magistrate Krishan Prasad, covered allegations that between February 1 and July 31, 2022, they unlawfully obtained $53,788.75 from the FRU while operating as the sole proprietors of Sports Supplies Limited (SSL). It was also alleged that between February 1 and May 11, 2022, they facilitated unauthorized payments to SSL, resulting in an additional improper gain of $7,291.83, despite knowing the company was ineligible to receive these funds.

During the court session, prosecution lawyer Ravinesh Lal confirmed that full disclosures had been provided to the accused on November 26 of the previous year. The couple’s legal representatives communicated their intention to seek a reconsideration of the charges from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

Their bail was extended, and the case has been adjourned until February 28 for further proceedings.

This case underscores the importance of transparency and accountability within organizations, especially those handling public funds. As the legal process unfolds, it highlights the necessity of due process and the right to a fair trial, reminding all that allegations are unproven until established in court.

In summary, the couple faces serious charges related to financial misconduct, and their upcoming court dates will be critical in determining the resolution of this situation.
