The Fiji Police Force’s Mpaisa Taskforce has made significant strides in addressing financial fraud by charging two women in separate cases involving the Mpaisa platform.

In one case, a 23-year-old woman from Rakiraki is accused of unlawfully obtaining $336 from a member of the public on January 31, 2023. Investigations revealed that the funds were mistakenly transferred to her account, which she then withdrew, despite being aware that she was not entitled to the money. This incident was reported to the Valelevu Police Station, leading to her arrest. She is currently in police custody and is scheduled to appear before the Sigatoka Magistrate Court today.

In a separate incident, a 44-year-old caregiver from Dreketi Feeder Road in Lautoka has been charged with obtaining financial advantage by allegedly acquiring $250 through the Mpaisa platform in January. She is reported to have created a Facebook account impersonating her husband—a DJ who provides live streaming services—without his knowledge, and collected payments for services that were never rendered. This fraudulent activity was reported at the Nabua Police Station, prompting her arrest. She too is in custody and is expected to appear in the Lautoka Magistrate Court today.

These incidents highlight the significant challenges posed by financial fraud linked to digital transactions, particularly on platforms like Mpaisa. The Fiji Police are actively encouraging the public to remain vigilant against suspicious online activities and to report any instances of fraud to safeguard against financial exploitation.

This proactive approach by the Fiji Police emphasizes their commitment to protecting the community and reinforces the need for heightened awareness regarding online transactions. With continued law enforcement efforts and public vigilance, there is hope that fewer individuals will fall victim to such deceptive practices in the future.

In summary, the actions taken by the Mpaisa Taskforce reflect a serious effort to combat financial fraud in Fiji, enhancing community safety as digital transactions continue to evolve.
