A 52-year-old man has been charged by the Fiji Police Force M-Paisa Taskforce Team for allegedly obtaining financial benefits through deceptive practices. The incident took place on September 8, 2023, when the accused reportedly misappropriated $100 from a victim via M-Paisa.
The investigation into the matter revealed that the victim had been browsing Facebook when they encountered a post promoting car hire services. Following instructions, the victim paid a deposit to secure a car rental. However, attempts to reach the driver via phone ended in failure. Concerned about the situation, the victim reported the issue to the Consumer Council, which then referred the case to the Fiji Police Force’s Criminal Investigation Department in Suva.
The accused is expected to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court later today.
This incident highlights the importance of vigilance when engaging in online transactions, as deceptive practices can result in financial loss. As awareness grows about such scams, it’s crucial for individuals to take precautionary measures and verify the legitimacy of offers before parting with their money. Hopefully, this case will serve as a reminder to others to be cautious and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
