A 52-year-old man has been arrested by the Fiji Police Force M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly committing fraud. The incident in question occurred on September 8, 2023, when the man reportedly deceived a victim out of $100 through the mobile payment service M-Paisa.

The case began when the victim saw a Facebook post advertising car rentals. Following the instructions, the victim paid a deposit to secure a car. However, attempts to contact the driver were unsuccessful, leading the victim to suspect a scam. The victim subsequently reported the situation to the Consumer Council, prompting an investigation by the Fiji Police Force’s Criminal Investigation Department in Suva.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Nasinu Magistrates Court later this afternoon.

This incident highlights the importance of vigilance when engaging in online transactions, especially on social media platforms, where fraudulent schemes can easily surface. It’s crucial for individuals to verify the legitimacy of such offers before making any payments. As law enforcement agencies continue to crack down on scams, this case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to protect consumers and maintain trust in digital financial services.
