A man in his 40s from Sigatoka has been charged following an investigation by the Fiji Police Cyber Task Force into a fraudulent online investment scheme. The suspect allegedly deceived a victim, swindling $10,000 through a false investment opportunity between May and June 2023.

The victim’s repeated attempts to contact the accused about the investment went unanswered, leading to a formal complaint at the Rakiraki Police Station. This prompted a swift response from the Cyber Task Force, resulting in the man being charged with two counts of Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and one count of Possession of Property Suspected to be Proceeds of Crime. He is set to appear in the Sigatoka Magistrates Court today.

This incident appears to be part of a larger trend of online investment fraud in Fiji, where authorities have noted increased cases of such scams. For example, several individuals recently charged in related cases highlight the importance of vigilance and awareness among potential investors. Law enforcement continues to urge the public to report fraudulent activities, as reporting can contribute to broader investigations and help safeguard the community against these schemes.

Efforts by the police to combat cybercrime and raise awareness about online scams are critical in protecting consumers, fostering hope for a safer digital environment. As more individuals come forward to report fraudulent activities, there is potential for greater accountability for perpetrators, which is a positive step towards deterring such deceptive practices.
