France Shines: Dupont Leads Rugby Sevens to Historic Gold

SAINT-DENIS, France — Antoine Dupont made a significant impact during the finals of the rugby sevens tournament at the Paris Olympics, scoring two tries and assisting in another, leading France to a 28-7 victory over two-time champions Fiji on Saturday. This victory marks a historic achievement for France, securing their first gold medal in rugby sevens and ending Fiji’s Olympic winning streak.

Dubbed the best rugby player in the world, Dupont was strategically held back for the first half. When he entered the match just after halftime, the score was tied at 7-7. His presence immediately shifted the momentum, as he sprinted down the sideline from deep within his half, evading a tackle by Jerry Tuwai and passing to Aaron Grandidier Nkanang for a crucial try, giving France a 14-7 lead.

Dupont’s late-game tries thrilled the crowd of 69,000 spectators, cementing France’s triumph. The win resonated significantly in the host nation, where rugby holds a special place, especially following the country’s previous disappointments in the Rugby World Cup.

Describing the atmosphere, Dupont noted the “electric” energy during the semifinals, which only intensified during the final. The excitement extended beyond the Stade de France, as fans at Roland Garros celebrated alongside tennis stars.

After receiving their gold medals, the French team celebrated joyously on the field. In the bronze medal match, South Africa overcame Australia 26-19, despite a late surge from the latter.

The victory not only serves as a redemption for Dupont after a disappointing Rugby World Cup but also marks a turning point for French rugby on an Olympic stage.
