France outplays Fiji with a disciplined performance in Bordeaux

France secured a convincing 34–21 victory against a determined Fiji team at Matmut Atlantique Stadium, showcasing their strong start and composure in the latter stages of the game. The match saw France taking a commanding lead early on, quickly scoring three tries in the opening 20 minutes, which set the stage for the contest.

Nicolas Depoortere initiated the scoring just six minutes into the match, marking his first try with France. Hooker Julien Marchand added a second from a rolling maul in the 15th minute before team captain Charles Ollivon capped off a remarkable first quarter by crossing the try line in the 19th minute. Thomas Ramos successfully converted each try, propelling France to a swift 21–0 advantage.

However, Fiji rallied impressively, responding with two tries before the halftime whistle. Kalaveti Ravouvou broke through for Fiji in the 28th minute, igniting hope for the visitors. Shortly before the half, Selestino Ravutaumada finished off a skilled move to reduce the deficit, with scrumhalf Simi Kuruvoli converting both attempts, bringing the score to 21–14 at the break.

As the second half began, Fiji continued their resurgence with Jiuta Wainiqolo scoring shortly after the restart, leveling the match at 21–21, which briefly shifted the momentum in their favor. Nonetheless, France quickly regained their composure and controlled the game through strategic discipline and superior territorial play. Ramos slotted two penalties in the 50th and 57th minutes, extending the lead to 27–21 as Fiji struggled to find solid footing.

The decisive moment arrived in the 71st minute when Depoortere completed his brace with a powerful try following sustained pressure from the French side. Ramos once again converted, sealing the score at 34–21, where it remained until the final whistle.

Despite the encouraging fightback from Fiji, France’s discipline in their game management and precision off the tee were ultimately the defining factors. The match not only marked another strong performance for France on home soil but also left Fiji with valuable insights to carry forward, even as they recognized the importance of a stronger start to compete effectively against top sides.

This win reflects France’s positive trajectory as they prepare for future challenges in their rugby journey, highlighting their blend of robust strategy and emerging talent on the international stage.
