France and Fiji Set for Epic Showdown in Olympic Rugby Final

Hosts France have set up a showdown against Fiji in the Gold Medal match after both teams secured decisive victories in the semi-finals, defeating South Africa (19-5) and Australia (31-7) respectively.

In the first semi-final, France initially struggled to convert early territorial advantage into points due to some nervous mistakes, while South Africa’s solid defense made it challenging for Les Bleus. Despite gaining field position late in the first half, South Africa couldn’t capitalize, leaving the score deadlocked at halftime.

The stalemate was broken early in the second half when South Africa’s Tristan Leyds scored in the corner, though he missed the conversion. France quickly responded with Rayan Rebbadj’s try, which he converted himself. Rebbadj struck again just two minutes later, converting once more. Antoine Dupont’s quick thinking then set up Jordan Sepho for the final points, sealing France’s 19-5 win.

The victory brings France, who have been seeking revenge against South Africa since last year’s Rugby World Cup quarter-final loss, to within one game of clinching gold in Paris.

In the second semi-final, Australia’s Ben Dowling scored early, with Dietrich Roache converting. Despite dominating the first half, Fiji showcased their flair in the second period, running in four tries. Joji Nasova scored first, with Iowane Teba converting. Iosefo Baleiwairiki followed up with another try and Teba added the conversion. Kamineli Rasaku scored next, with Waisea Nacuqu converting. Terio Veilawa’s penalty further extended their lead, and Selestino Ravutaumada sealed their 31-7 triumph with a last-minute try, converted by Nacuqu.

Fiji remains undefeated in Olympic rugby matches in any edition of the Games.
