A classroom block at Vunivutu Primary School in Vanua Levu, which was wrecked by Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasa four years ago, remains unrepaired.

Former Vunivutu Village headwoman Ranadiniceva Raluna expressed the villagers’ ongoing uncertainty regarding the situation. She stated, “We are unsure whether there are any plans in place or if our pleas for help have been heard.” Raluna emphasized the lack of a clear timeline or concrete rebuilding plans from the authorities over the past four years, which has intensified their concerns.

She voiced fears that without official action, the community’s needs would continue to be neglected. “We hope the Government listens to our plea because the previous administration didn’t,” she added.

In response, Education Minister Aseri Radrodro acknowledged that most schools damaged by the cyclone had received assistance from bilateral partners, including Australia. “For those who have missed out, we’re trying to get an update from a department within the ministry regarding all schools affected by the cyclone,” he stated. Radrodro affirmed that they recognized the rehabilitation process is still incomplete and assured that it is something they will address.
