Surgery delays at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM) in Fiji may soon see significant improvements, as four of the hospital’s eight operating theatres are now back in operation. The Assistant Minister for Health, Penioni Ravunawa, confirmed that Operating Rooms 1 and 2, the Step-down Room, and the Labour Operating Room have all been fully restored to functionality.
Currently, Operating Rooms 3 and 4 are undergoing cleaning in preparation for their reopening, while refurbishments and installations of the remaining four theatres are underway, being managed by the Public Works Department. This announcement follows recent reports indicating only two theatres were operational, placing immense pressure on doctors who had to prioritize emergency procedures, causing many patients to await surgery for prolonged periods.
Ravunawa reassured the public that the Ministry is collaborating closely with the Public Works Department and other partners to expedite the repair processes and enhance surgical capacity. He highlighted that ensuring quality patient care and effective service delivery remains a top priority, supported by ongoing partnerships and coordination among healthcare professionals.
Challenging conditions tied to years of neglect and structural damage have posed significant hurdles, but Ravunawa reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to upgrading hospital infrastructure, which is essential for strengthening healthcare services for all Fijians.
This renewed commitment aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance the hospital’s capabilities. Previous announcements have highlighted significant investments in infrastructure, including new elevators and upgrades to critical areas such as kitchens and operating theatres. Health officials remain optimistic that these improvements will ultimately lead to better healthcare delivery for Fiji’s population.
As the situation develops, the resilience of both healthcare workers and the wider community reflects a hopeful outlook for the future of healthcare services in Fiji. The collective push for necessary reforms indicates a strong commitment to enhancing patient care and accessibility, promising a more robust healthcare framework for all citizens.
