Fountain Showers: A Disturbing New Year Trend in Lautoka

Spread the love

Street dwellers in Lautoka have been observed using the water fountain at the Elizabeth Square roundabout, near the post office, to take showers. This situation became apparent when Selwa Nandan, a trustee of the Western Disabled People’s Association, witnessed the scene on New Year’s Day, noting two individuals bathing in the fountain in broad daylight.

Lautoka City Council CEO, Mohammed Anees Khan, expressed that they are aware of the street dwelling issue affecting the city and have reached out to law enforcement and the Social Welfare Department for assistance. During the festive season, the council had installed a Christmas tree and lights in Elizabeth Square and placed a security guard on duty overnight to protect the infrastructure and ensure the safety of visitors.

Mr. Khan mentioned that initially, they hoped that the increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic during the day would deter such behavior. However, following Mr. Nandan’s observations, the matter has been formally reported to the police and referred to the Social Welfare Department to identify and assist those affected.

Additionally, it was noted that similar situations have been observed along Marine Drive, which has also been included in the report to authorities.

This incident sheds light on the broader issue of homelessness and the challenges faced by those living on the streets. The involvement of local authorities and outreach services suggests a move toward providing support and assistance for these individuals, highlighting a glimmer of hope for addressing the needs of the community.

While the conditions are troubling, it is crucial to recognize the proactive measures being taken by local officials. Efforts to trace and assist street dwellers not only aim to restore dignity but also promote a more compassionate approach to those in need within the community.
