Fountain of Necessity: Street Dwellers Seek Relief in Lautoka

Spread the love

In Lautoka, street dwellers have been using a public water fountain at the Elizabeth Square roundabout, located near the post office, for bathing. This situation came to light when Selwa Nandan, a trustee of the Western Disabled People’s Association, witnessed an alarming scene on New Year’s Day where a man and woman were seen showering in their underwear at the fountain.

Lautoka City Council’s CEO, Mohammed Anees Khan, acknowledged the presence of individuals living on the streets and stated that the council is working closely with law enforcement and the Social Welfare Department to address the issue. During the festive season, the council had set up a Christmas tree and decorations in Elizabeth Square for visitors, as well as stationed a security guard overnight to protect the area and deter undesirable behavior.

Mr. Khan indicated that the council hoped increased activity from vehicles and pedestrians during the day would help prevent such incidents. However, in the wake of this public concern, the matter has been escalated to the police and relevant social services to identify and assist the affected individuals.

This situation highlights the ongoing challenge of homelessness in urban areas and underscores the importance of community support and effective social welfare systems. By addressing this issue with compassion and action, authorities can work towards improving the lives of those in need.

Summary: Street dwellers in Lautoka have been using a public fountain for bathing, prompting concern from local officials. The Lautoka City Council is collaborating with law enforcement and social services to address the issue, emphasizing the need for compassion and effective support for vulnerable populations.
