During the 9th Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW), held at the Fiji Museum, Assistant Minister for Communication Aliki Bia emphasized the collective responsibility for peace. The event, organized by Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), attracted youth groups, civil society, and local leaders who engaged in dialogues on fostering peace initiatives within Fiji and globally.
The gathering’s theme, “Building Bridges for National Peace Initiatives: Establishing Citizen-led Legislate Peace Program,” was highlighted by Vice Branch Director of HWPL Fiji, Epeli Bakatava, who noted that genuine peace requires action alongside words. Bakatava stated, “It requires action, initiatives that unite people across different backgrounds, efforts that empower youth, and laws that uphold justice.”
The DPCW, established in 2016, consists of 10 articles and 38 clauses promoting disarmament and peaceful conflict resolution, garnering global support. Director of HWPL Fiji, Anya Marchenko, detailed how HWPL pursues peace projects, including the “Legislate Peace” initiative and various community activities aimed at promoting peace and unity.
Following the successful plogging campaign in partnership with youth NGO One Nation Our People (ONOP), which featured previous events in Suva and Lautoka, more are yet to come on April 19 and 20, reinforcing community involvement in peace-building efforts.
The event bolstered a hopeful narrative, showcasing local commitment to peaceful coexistence and collaborative initiatives that align with Fiji’s broader aspirations for a harmonious society. Such engagements underline the critical role that community-led efforts play in fostering a culture of peace, reflecting a shared vision among various stakeholders to build a brighter future for all.
