China’s ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, has urged the Chinese community in Fiji to increase their contributions to the country’s development. Speaking at a celebration for the Mid-Autumn Festival and China’s National Day in Suva, Mr. Zhou reflected on the historical ties between China and Fiji, noting thatChinese immigrants first arrived in Fiji in 1855 and have since played a crucial role in the nation’s growth.
He pointed out that over the past 170 years, the Chinese community has built strong relationships with the Fijian people and significantly contributed to the country’s economic and social progress. With the upcoming 50th anniversary of China-Fiji diplomatic relations and the 170th anniversary of the first Chinese immigrants, Mr. Zhou expressed hope that the Chinese community would enhance their efforts in supporting Fiji’s development.
He emphasized the importance of hard work and collaboration for a prosperous future, encouraging the community to integrate their cultural heritage with their commitments to Fiji.
During the festivities, Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere praised the Chinese farming community for their vital role in bolstering Fiji’s food security and agricultural sector. He acknowledged their contributions to local food production and agricultural exports, expressing gratitude for their dedication to farming, which ensures healthy food options for Fijian families.
Jenny Seeto, President of the Chinese Association of Fiji, noted that the upcoming anniversary will mark a significant achievement for their community. She highlighted the vibrant presence of the Chinese community in Fiji and its impact on the social and economic landscape of the nation.
