A bench warrant has been issued by the Suva Magistrate’s Court for Isikeli Komaisavai, the former vice-president of the Nasinu constituency for the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), after he did not attend his court hearing on Thursday. Komaisavai, age 52, is facing a serious charge for allegedly causing harm through electronic communication.
The incident in question dates back to February 10, 2021, when it is reported that Komaisavai made threatening remarks on Facebook towards former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, suggesting he should be killed. During the court proceedings, prosecutor Sharmila Lata informed Magistrate Jeremaia Savou that all witnesses were present, but Komaisavai was absent. As such, the court allowed the trial to proceed in his absence.
Prominently, among the witnesses was Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum himself, who was called to testify against Komaisavai. The court has now adjourned the case, with a judgment set to be delivered on December 17.
In light of this situation, it’s important to recognize the judicial system’s commitment to addressing threats made via electronic platforms. This case serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that individuals have when using social media, highlighting the potential legal consequences of harmful communication.
As proceedings continue, there remains hope for a resolution that reinforces safety and accountability within the community. The upcoming hearing in December may serve as an opportunity for justice to prevail and for a message to be communicated about the importance of respectful discourse in public forums.
