The Suva Magistrate’s Court has issued a bench warrant for Isikeli Komaisavai, the former vice-president of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) for the Nasinu constituency, following his failure to attend a scheduled court hearing on Thursday. Komaisavai, 52, is facing charges related to causing harm through electronic communication.

The charges stem from comments he allegedly made on Facebook on February 10, 2021, where he called for the killing of then Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, claiming he would be killed. During the court proceedings, Police prosecutor Sharmila Lata informed Magistrate Jeremaia Savou that all prosecution witnesses were present, except for Komaisavai. Lata requested that the trial proceed in his absence, a motion that the court approved.

Among the witnesses from the State is Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum himself, who has been summoned to testify in the case. The court has adjourned the proceedings until December 17, at which point a judgment will be delivered.

This situation highlights the serious consequences of online speech and the legal ramifications that may follow inappropriate comments made on social media. It serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible communication in today’s digital age.

Summary: Isikeli Komaisavai, ex-vice-president of SODELPA, faces a bench warrant for failing to attend court, where he is charged for harmful comments made on Facebook about the former Attorney-General. The case will continue on December 17.
