The Suva Magistrate’s Court has issued a bench warrant for Isikeli Komaisavai, the former vice-president of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) for the Nasinu constituency, following his failure to attend a scheduled court hearing. Komaisavai, aged 52, faces charges related to causing harm through electronic communication.

The charges stem from a Facebook comment made on February 10, 2021, in which Komaisavai allegedly called for the assassination of then Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, while also suggesting that he himself would be killed. In his absence, police prosecutor Sharmila Lata informed Magistrate Jeremaia Savou that all other witnesses were present and requested the court to proceed with the trial in Komaisavai’s absence, which was granted.

Notably, one of the state prosecution witnesses present included Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum, who was summoned to provide testimony against Komaisavai. The case has been rescheduled for December 17, when a judgment will be rendered.

In light of the situation, it’s important to remember that the judicial system aims to ensure accountability, and the upcoming hearing presents an opportunity for resolution. The case also highlights the critical nature of responsible communication in the digital age, as officials and citizens navigate the complexities of online interactions.
