A former policeman charged with the alleged rape of a friend will learn his fate just two days before Christmas. The case, presided over by Justice Dane Tuiqereqere, was scheduled for judgment yesterday but has been postponed to December 23.

The accused, a married father of two, stands accused of raping a 26-year-old woman in the Valelevu police single men’s barracks on May 26 of the previous year. He continues to assert his innocence through a not-guilty plea.

On May 30, the accused appeared before Magistrate Charles Ratakele in Nasinu, who subsequently transferred the case to the High Court for further proceedings. The accused’s attorney, Olive Grace, had requested that the verdict be postponed until January, but the judge has decided to deliver the ruling before the Christmas holiday.

As the date approaches, both the prosecution and the defense await the outcome, which could significantly impact the lives of those involved. This case has drawn attention not only for its serious allegations but also for the timing of the verdict, prompting discussions about the implications of such cases during significant holidays. Regardless of the outcome, it highlights the critical importance of addressing allegations of sexual violence with diligence and sensitivity.
