Former Minister for Fisheries and Forests Kalaveti Ravu has entered a plea of not guilty to a charge of abuse of office. He is accused of interfering with a ministry investigation last year concerning the illegal trade of a banned species of beche-de-mer.
Ravu’s lawyer, Lavi Rokoika, stated that his client was prepared to have his plea recorded following the provision of necessary disclosures. FICAC prosecutor Lavenia Ravuikadavu informed the court that there were no admissions made during the caution interview.
Additionally, Tekata Toaisi, the Ministry of Fisheries and Forests’ regional manager for the North, who is alleged to have assisted Ravu between July and August of the previous year, has indicated his intention to have his plea recorded during the next court session.
Lawyer Sovaia Nagonevulavula, appearing on behalf of attorney Joji Cakau, mentioned that a notice of change of solicitors has been filed and they are awaiting the necessary disclosures.
Both men appeared before Suva Magistrate Jeremaia Savou and are scheduled to return to court on August 26.
