Former Minister MIA as Corruption Case Unfolds!

Kalaveti Ravu, the former Minister for Fisheries and Forests, missed his court appearance today regarding a corruption case at the Magistrates Court in Suva. His lawyer, Jioji Cakau, stated that Ravu was attending Parliamentary duties in Nadi. However, state counsel Lavenia Ravuikadavu mentioned that they had not received prior notification about his absence.

Tekata Toaisi, the former Regional Manager for Fisheries and Forests in the North, was present in court alongside Ravu. The allegations against Ravu assert that between July 25 and August 31, 2023, he improperly interfered with a Ministry of Forestry investigation into the illegal trade of prohibited beche-de-mer species. Toaisi is accused of assisting Ravu in this abuse of office while employed by the Ministry.

The court has scheduled a recall of the case for January 21.

This situation highlights the ongoing challenges within governmental integrity and accountability. The reminder of the case serves as an opportunity for institutional improvement and a chance to reassure the public about commitment to lawful governance. As the legal process unfolds, there is potential for greater transparency and reform in how such investigations are conducted in the future.
