Spread the love

Former Fisheries and Forests Minister Kalaveti Ravu did not attend court this morning where he faces charges of abuse of office. Ravu’s co-defendant, former Regional Manager North Tekata Toaisi, was present at the Suva Magistrates Court before Magistrate Jeremaia Savou.

During the hearing, FICAC Counsel Lavenia Ravuikadavu stated that they had not been notified of Ravu’s absence and warned that a bench warrant would be sought if he fails to appear at the next court hearing. Toaisi’s lawyer, Jioji Cakau, clarified that Ravu was absent due to a Parliament Committee Meeting in Nadi. Cakau also mentioned that Ravu’s legal team intends to submit pre-trial documents and disclosures to the FICAC by this coming Friday.

The charges allege that between July 25, 2023, and August 31, 2023, Ravu interfered with a Ministry of Forestry investigation concerning illegal activities related to the trade of banned beche-de-mer species. Meanwhile, Toaisi is accused of assisting Ravu in the alleged abuse of office.

The court has scheduled the next mention for the 21st of this month, with a trial date set for February.

This case highlights significant issues within governmental oversight and the importance of accountability. The forthcoming trial may serve as a reminder of the vital role transparency plays in public service, as authorities continue to pursue justice.
