Former Miners Urged to Use $10K Payments Wisely

The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh, has urged former Vatukoula Gold miners who recently received $10,000 each to use the funds wisely.

Out of 368 former miners who went on strike three decades ago, 153 have been approved for payment, while the Ministry is currently verifying the next-of-kin for the remaining individuals before their payments can be processed.

Singh mentioned that a total of $25,000 will be distributed to 368 families, with the initial $10,000 being allocated from this year’s budget and the remaining $15,000 set to be provided next year.

He acknowledged the hardships faced by the miners, stating, “I know you deserve much more. You have suffered much more, but this is what we are able to do for you as a government. This support will help you make a fresh start for your family.”

He emphasized the importance of utilizing the funds responsibly, advising recipients not to squander the money on unnecessary expenses.

The Ministry of Finance is expected to transfer the $10,000 to the accounts of the 153 approved recipients by Friday.
