A 50-year-old man, Samuela Tuibeqa, has been charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with one count of Obtaining a Financial Advantage. The former employee of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court on Friday.

Tuibeqa allegedly made false claims for overtime pay and other allowances totaling $7,355.86 between August 1, 2019, and December 31, 2019, during his tenure at the Ministry. FICAC Junior State Counsel, Sameea Nisa, confirmed in court that initial disclosures had been provided to the accused.

Two sureties were also presented for Tuibeqa in the courtroom. The prosecution did not oppose bail but requested the imposition of strict conditions. Resident Magistrate Yogesh Prasad subsequently issued a Stop Departure Order against Tuibeqa, effective immediately.

As part of his bail conditions, Tuibeqa is prohibited from re-offending or interfering with potential prosecution witnesses. He must continue living at his current residence and inform the court of any address changes. Additionally, he is required to report to FICAC Headquarters in Suva once a month. Tuibeqa was ordered to seek Legal Aid support and have legal counsel for his next court appearance.

The case has been scheduled for mention on December 13.

This situation underscores the importance of accountability and integrity within public service sectors, emphasizing that actions have consequences. With legal processes underway, there remains hope for a fair resolution while reinforcing the need for ethical conduct within government positions.
