Former President and Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere has expressed strong support for the establishment of Fiji’s inaugural National Rural Development Policy (NRDP), highlighting its crucial role in enhancing the well-being, resilience, and dignity of the nation’s rural and maritime communities.
During the NRDP Multistakeholder Consultation held in Labasa, Ratu Wiliame emphasized that the policy should reflect the principles of stewardship of the vanua (land and community) and a commitment to safeguard resources for future generations. He addressed the participants not only as a paramount chief and former head of state but also as a member of the Great Council of Chiefs, underscoring that genuine development extends beyond mere infrastructure and service delivery.
He praised the government for initiating the NRDP, which stems from the assessment of the Integrated Rural Development Framework. Ratu Wiliame pointed out that many persistent issues—including access to water, roads, transportation, communications, livelihoods, and essential services—continue to plague rural communities, particularly those in the Northern Division.
Highlighting the significance of collaboration, Ratu Wiliame insisted on a co-creation approach to policy development, stressing the need for active participation from communities, traditional leaders, government entities, civil society, the private sector, and development partners.
The NRDP is positioned within a comprehensive Change Management Programme spearheaded by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management. This initiative aims to strengthen systems, improve coordination, and transform how development efforts are delivered to Fiji’s rural and maritime areas.
This initiative represents a hopeful shift towards addressing the challenges faced by rural communities, fostering a partnership approach that connects various sectors for the greater good of all Fijians.
