Two former educators from Ra High School have been charged with financial misconduct involving school grant funds by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Sanmogan Naidu, the former principal, and Semi Voresara Nabalarua, a former agricultural assistant teacher, faced the charges at the Rakiraki Magistrates’ Court.

Naidu has been accused of illegally obtaining $4,000 between July 1 and July 31, 2020, by directing the creation of payment vouchers from the school’s Free Education Grant account, despite being aware he was not entitled to the money. Both he and Nabalarua are also charged with jointly acquiring a total of $12,484.25 by creating payment vouchers and encashing checks from the school’s Vocational Grant account between June 1, 2019, and October 31, 2020.

The court, represented by Resident Magistrate Timoci Qalinauci, granted both individuals non-cash bail set at $500 each. Conditions of their bail prohibit re-offending and require them to avoid any interference with prosecution witnesses. They must also notify the court before changing their residential addresses. The case has been adjourned until October 1, 2025.

This incident underscores the vital role of accountability and integrity in educational institutions, reflecting ongoing efforts by FICAC to address corruption within public service. By holding individuals accountable for financial misconduct, these actions may help restore public trust in the management of educational funds and promote ethical practices among those in leadership positions. While the allegations are serious, the legal proceedings may serve as a cautionary tale that encourages transparency and accountability in all educational areas and public sectors in Fiji.
