The Suva Magistrate’s Court has scheduled a trial for former Acting Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Salote Panapasa, who faces charges of abuse of office and an alternative charge of general dishonesty causing a loss. During her appearance before Magistrate Krishan Prasad on Thursday, it was revealed that Panapasa allegedly instructed officers to utilize building materials belonging to the Fiji Corrections Service for her private residence in Kinoya between August 1 and September 30, 2023.
Moreover, it is claimed that she directed a Corrections officer to manipulate weekly reports to rationalize the use of these materials at her home during the period of August 1 to October 31, 2023. While the court session was meant to address agreed facts, Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) lawyer Mary Takinana mentioned that only two factual points—Panapasa’s name and position—were agreed upon, with the remainder being contested. As a result, both parties concluded to set the trial date for June 23 to 27 of next year, and her bail was accordingly extended.
This case highlights the importance of accountability within public service roles. As the trial progresses, it serves as a reminder of the need for transparency and ethical behavior in leadership positions, reinforcing hope that justice will prevail. The upcoming trial date allows for a thorough examination of the facts, which could potentially lead to positive reforms in governance and public trust moving forward.
