The Suva Magistrate’s Court has scheduled a trial for former Acting Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Salote Panapasa. She appeared before Magistrate Krishan Prasad on Thursday, facing two counts of abuse of office and an additional charge of general dishonesty resulting in loss.

The allegations against Panapasa state that between August 1 and September 30, 2023, while working as a civil servant in Suva, she directed officers to use building materials from the Fiji Corrections Service for personal renovations at her residence in Kinoya. Furthermore, it is claimed that during the period from August 1 to October 31, 2023, she ordered a Corrections officer to modify weekly reports to justify the materials’ usage at her home.

Although the court was expected to hear the agreed facts of the case, FICAC lawyer Mary Takinana revealed that Panapasa’s legal team confirmed only two consensus points—her name and job title—with the remaining facts contested. Consequently, both parties agreed on a trial date set for June 23 to 27, next year, with Panapasa’s bail being extended in the meantime.

This case highlights the importance of accountability within public service roles and reinforces the ongoing efforts to uphold integrity in governance. As the trial approaches, it will be an opportunity for the legal system to ensure transparency and justice in addressing allegations of misconduct.
