Former Chief Executive of the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation, Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, along with current Chief Financial Officer Vimlesh Sagar, is set to take their plea next month regarding charges brought against them by the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC). The two defendants appeared today in the Suva Magistrates Court, where the prosecution requested additional time to provide details on the case.
During the court proceedings, FICAC Counsel pushed for Sayed-Khaiyum and Sagar to enter their pleas. However, the defense argued that they would only do so once the specifics of the prosecution’s case were disclosed. Sayed-Khaiyum is charged with abuse of office and general dishonesty resulting in a loss, while Sagar faces a single charge of general dishonesty leading to a loss.
The charges relate to allegations concerning the tender and procurement of a vehicle priced at $207,470. The court has scheduled the next hearing for March 5th, when the pleas and particulars of the case are expected to be clarified. This case highlights the ongoing efforts by FICAC to uphold integrity within public institutions in Fiji.
