A former police officer has received a sentence of four years and 11 months for the manslaughter of an intoxicated man. Fifita Toma Tawake, 28, was sentenced by Justice Thushara Rajasinghe after he admitted to the fatal assault. The incident took place on January 13 this year when Tawake, while intoxicated himself, punched a man who had tapped their car as they slowly rolled through a red light in Central Street, Suva.
The court expressed dismay over Tawake’s actions, highlighting his lack of respect for the victim, who was left unconscious on the pavement. Justice Rajasinghe criticized Tawake for dragging the victim to a nearby corner and abandoning him in the rain, demonstrating a troubling disregard for human life.
Despite Tawake’s status as a first-time offender and his immediate plea of guilty, the court determined that a significant prison term was warranted in this case. He will serve a non-parole period of two years and 11 months.
This case serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of reckless behavior, particularly from those in positions of authority. While the situation is tragic, it also highlights the importance of accountability and the judicial system’s role in delivering justice.
Summary: A former policeman was sentenced to nearly five years in prison for manslaughter after assaulting an intoxicated man who was left unconscious on the street. Justice Rajasinghe condemned the lack of respect shown by the offender, while acknowledging his remorse.
