The Vanua o Nadonumai is making significant strides in combating drug-related issues within Suva Village by appointing 14 former drug addicts to serve as village officers. According to Turaga na Tui Suva, Sanaila Mudunavosa, the initiative leverages the unique insights of those directly affected by drug addiction to better recognize and prevent drug-related behaviors within the community.

This proactive strategy is part of a broader goal to eliminate the influence of drugs and enhance the overall well-being of the community. The appointed officers will actively patrol the village during both day and night, focusing on areas where drug use has been prevalent, especially at night. If an individual is caught with drugs, they will first receive counsel from village elders. However, repeat offenders face potential expulsion from the village.

Mudunavosa underscores the crucial role of familial relationships, asserting that strong bonds between parents and children are essential for shaping a healthier societal future. The collective efforts of the community showcase a strong commitment to addressing the pressing issue of drug abuse and fostering a positive environment for its youth.

This initiative aligns with similar efforts seen in other regions of Fiji, such as Kadavu, where local leaders and law enforcement have united to tackle drug issues through community engagement and support. Overall, these actions reflect a hopeful and collaborative approach aimed at securing a safer and healthier future for the upcoming generations.
