Authorities are currently looking into an alleged case of forced eviction in Lovu Seaside, Lautoka, following a complaint lodged by a tenant, Sofia Farzana. Divisional Police Commander West, Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa, confirmed that they have received the report regarding the eviction incident.

In a video shared on social media, Ms. Farzana, a mother of two, depicted events where individuals believed to be landowners were removing fencing and plants from her property while insisting that she vacate the premises. One man in the clip claimed that the Farzana family had sold the land without the consent of the landowners and demanded proof of a lease title in her name.

Ms. Farzana explained that her grandmother purchased the land in 1998, and she had inherited the title shortly before her grandmother’s recent passing. “I was born here. I was brought up by my grandmother. She bought this land and built this house,” she stressed.

Additionally, Ms. Farzana reported that the landowners have asked for $15,000 to repurchase the land. “They said if we want to stay here, we must buy the land again with a new title. Where do we get the money? My husband is a struggling chef. This is a degrading and humiliating experience for me and my two little children,” she lamented.

SSP Vaisewa mentioned that investigations into the matter are ongoing, reflecting the authorities’ commitment to addressing the situation adequately.

This incident highlights the challenges faced by individuals in leasing agreements and the emotional toll that such disputes can take on families. It is crucial for both parties to work towards resolution and understanding to prevent escalations that lead to distressing situations.

While this situation brings forth significant challenges, it also opens a dialogue about tenant rights and the importance of fair housing practices, encouraging communities to advocate for lawful and ethical treatment in housing matters.
