Police are currently probing an alleged forced eviction incident that occurred at Lovu Seaside in Lautoka. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Iakobo Vaisewa confirmed that a complaint was filed by tenant Sofia Farzana, who accused her landlord of coercing her to leave her home.

In a video shared on social media, Ms. Farzana, a mother of two, can be seen as individuals, believed to be the landowners, remove fences and plants from her property, insisting on her eviction. A man featured in the video accused Ms. Farzana’s family of selling the land without the landowner’s approval and requested that she provide proof of a lease with her name on it.

Ms. Farzana asserted that her grandmother purchased the land in 1998 and transferred the title to her just before passing away. “I was born here. I grew up with my grandmother. She bought this land and built this house. She has transferred this property under my name,” she stated.

Compounding the issue, Ms. Farzana claimed the landowners demanded $15,000 for her to repurchase the land. She expressed her distress, saying, “They said if we want to stay here, we must buy the land again with a new title. Where do we get the money? My husband is a struggling chef. This is a degrading and humiliating experience for me and my two little children.”

SSP Vaisewa has confirmed that the investigation into this matter is ongoing, highlighting the police’s commitment to addressing such serious complaints.

This situation sheds light on the vulnerabilities faced by tenants, especially in instances involving land ownership disputes. It is essential for the legal rights of individuals in these scenarios to be upheld, ensuring that families like Ms. Farzana’s are not subjected to undue stress and hardship. The ongoing investigation may provide hope for a resolution that allows families to remain in their homes without fear of unfair eviction.

In summary, police are investigating an alleged forced eviction at Lovu Seaside involving Sofia Farzana, who claims her landlord is trying to evict her and her children without justification. The case highlights the challenges faced by families in similar situations, with authorities working to ensure justice is served.
