Forced Eviction Sparks Controversy in Lautoka

Spread the love

Authorities are currently looking into a reported forced eviction that took place in Lovu Seaside, Lautoka. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Iakobo Vaisewa confirmed that they received a complaint from a tenant named Sofia Farzana. She alleges that her landlord compelled her to vacate her home.

In a video shared on social media, Ms. Farzana can be seen capturing a scene where individuals, believed to be landowners, dismantle her perimeter fencing and uproot plants on her property while voiding her right to stay. A man featured in the video contended that Ms. Farzana and her family sold the land without the necessary consent from the owners and demanded documentation of a lease in her name.

Ms. Farzana countered that her grandmother purchased the land in 1998 and that the title was transferred to her before her grandmother’s recent passing. “I was born here. I was brought up by my grandmother. She bought this land and built this house. She has transferred this property under my name,” she stated.

Furthermore, she disclosed that the landowners are demanding $15,000 to allow her and her family to repurchase the land. Ms. Farzana expressed distress, stating, “Where do we get the money? My husband is a struggling chef. This is a degrading and humiliating experience for me and my two little children.”

SSP Vaisewa has assured the public that the investigation into this matter is ongoing, highlighting the commitment of law enforcement to address such grievances.

In light of the situation, it is important to recognize the complexities of land ownership and tenant rights, which can often lead to significant challenges for individuals seeking to maintain their homes. The ongoing police investigation could potentially bring resolution and clarity to this distressing situation for Ms. Farzana and her family, illustrating the community’s support for rightful ownership and fair treatment.
