Authorities are currently looking into a reported forced eviction that took place in Lovu Seaside, Lautoka. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Iakobo Vaisewa confirmed that they received a complaint from Sofia Farzana, a tenant who alleges that her landlord compelled her to leave her residence.

In a video shared on social media, Ms. Farzana, a mother of two, can be seen documenting individuals, presumed to be landowners, removing her property’s perimeter fencing and plants while insisting on her eviction. One man featured in the video accused Ms. Farzana and her family of selling the land without the necessary approval from the landowner. He demanded she present a lease title in her name.

Ms. Farzana contends that her grandmother purchased the land in 1998, and the title was passed on to her before her grandmother’s recent passing. “I was born here. I was brought up by my grandmother. She bought this land and built this house. She has transferred this property under my name,” she expressed. Adding to the distress, she claimed that the landowners asked for $15,000 to repurchase the land.

“They stated that if we want to stay here, we must re-acquire the land with a new title. Where do we get the money? My husband is a struggling chef. This is a degrading and humiliating experience for me and my two little children,” Ms. Farzana lamented. SSP Vaisewa has confirmed that investigations into the matter are ongoing.

The situation highlights the often complex and emotional issues surrounding land ownership and tenancy. It serves as a reminder of the importance of establishing clear legal titles and communication between landlords and tenants. As authorities move forward with their investigation, it is hoped that a fair and just resolution will be reached, ideally allowing Ms. Farzana and her family to secure their home and future.

In summary, the ongoing police investigation into this alleged forced eviction underscores critical legal and social issues regarding land ownership in the area, emphasizing the need for clear communication and proper documentation in landlord-tenant relationships.
